 Boards and Commissions

Planning Commission
The Planning Commission reviews plans for subdivision, land development and requests for Zoning Ordinance or Map amendments, and advises the Board of Supervisors on the appropriateness of the applications.

Zoning Hearing Board

The Zoning Hearing Board considers applications from property owners who are seeking a Variance from the Zoning Ordinance regulations that govern their property, or a Special Exception for a use that the Township reserves the right to take a closer look at because of the potential for nuisance.

Park and Recreation Board

The Park and Recreation Board works closely with Township staff to see that the parks are well maintained and available for public use. They actively work with the various sports leagues to monitor the need for fields and with neighborhood groups to see that most recreational activities are provided for in one or another of the Township parks.

Historical Commission

The Historical Commission works hard to enrich our community through the preservation of buildings that remind us of how our community evolved. With over 200 structures on the historical inventory, East Whiteland is rich in buildings that trace their origins to the early 1700’s.

Environmental Advisory Council

The Environmental Advisory Council monitors land usage and stream conditions and makes recommendations to the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission. They also work to educate property owners on the importance of recycling.

Board of Supervisors
Local government in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania is divided into a number of classifications. There are three categories of townships - townships of the First, Second and Third Class. East Whiteland Township is a Township of the Second Class. It is governed by a three-member Board of Supervisors elected at-large, who each serve six-year terms that include executive and legislative responsibilities.
The Board of Supervisors is empowered to appoint professionals to assist it in the daily operation of Township business and to provide advice and counsel on technical matters. Additionally, the Board appoints all members of various boards and commissions including the Zoning Hearing Board and the Planning Commission. The Board of Supervisors also hears conditional use applications in accordance with the Municipalities Planning Code and the East Whiteland Township Zoning Ordinance.
The Board of Supervisors levies Township taxes and appropriations to various departments as well as to subsidiary boards and commissions. In November and December, public hearings are held to review the budget for the following year. Residents are encouraged to attend these meetings to review and comment on the proposed budget.
The Board of Supervisors meets on the second Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. to conduct regular Township business.
