Virginia McMichael, SupervisorVirginia McMichael

Virginia McMichael is currently serving her second term as a member of the East Whiteland Township Board of Supervisors. First sworn in in January 2000, voters recognized her community leadership when they elected her to a second term that started in January 2006.

As chair of the East Whiteland comprehensive plan task force, McMichael lead the effort to improve transportation and safety in the township. Under the comprehensive plan, a township-wide trail network would connect East Whiteland paths with the Chester County trail system. Decreasing dependency on automobiles, the trails also would connect neighborhoods with parks, schools and retail establishments.

She also sponsored an 18-month moratorium on new development in East Whiteland in conjunction with the comprehensive plan revision. In addition to implementing the comprehensive plan, McMichael also would like to revitalize the Route 30 corridor and to make the township responsive to residents’ concerns.

She earned a B.A. in English from Middlebury College in Vermont. Fluent in Spanish and French, McMichael spent her junior year abroad at the University of London. She earned a J.D. degree from the University of Texas. McMichael and her husband, Larry, have four children.

John Mott, SupervisorJohn Mott

John Mott was sworn in as a supervisor in January 2004. He has been a volunteer with the East Whiteland Volunteer Fire Association for more than 25 years and served as President of the fire company for 13 years.

While no stranger to public service, his campaign for the Board of Supervisor's position was the first time Mott sought public office. He felt compelled to do so to provide a better direction for East Whiteland. The issues were budget, zoning and development, as well as fire company issues. These are the same goals Mott is striving to accomplish as a Supervisor and is already well on his way.

“We would like the township to grow in a way that preserves its character,” said Mott, “and at the same time, maintain and improve basic services. I think we need to take care of basic business first, such as road maintenance and public safety, which are priorities.”

His years in office have been a positive experience. Mott has enjoyed working to see the changes take place in his community that effect an improved quality of life.

John Mott is a civil/structural engineer with Parsons E&C in Reading. He earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Penn State University and is a registered Professional Engineer in seven states.

John and his wife Renee have been residents of East Whiteland Township for 26 years.

William Holmes

Picture

On Monday, January 7, 2008, Board members Virginia McMichael and John Mott, welcomed the newest member, Bill Holmes and watched as he took his oath of office. The Honorable Chester Darlington administered the oath. Bill was given a hearty welcome from members of the audience. Ms. McMichael congratulated him and spoke to his background. Mr. Holmes thanked his wife and all who supported him during his campaign. He also thanked out going supervisor, Joe Corrigan for his years of service to the Township.

Bill and his wife Veronica have lived in East Whiteland Township since they were married in 1996. They share their home with 4 cats: Tigger, Powder, Bilbo, and Pippin. They became certified scuba divers through Aqua Adventure in Frazer and have taken several dive trips.

A 1986 graduate of LaSalle University with a BA in Computer Science, Bill is an IT professional who has worked for The Vanguard Group since 1995. While at LaSalle, Bill joined the Sigma Beta Kappa fraternity and eventually became Vice-President. He still keeps touch with many of his fraternity brothers.

During the last 10 years Bill has done volunteer work for a variety of organizations. As an animal lover, his initial volunteer efforts focused on the plight of animals and the human health hazards resulting from inhumane practices. As a result of some of his experiences, Bill became a vegetarian in 1998 and has remained one ever since.

Bill also became involved with charitable organizations like Habitat for Humanity, the SHARE Food program, and the Christian Children’s Fund and now focuses his time and support on these types of organizations because they empower people to help themselves. The people who benefit from these organizations wish to improve their lives, and all they need is a helping hand. His desire to become a Township Supervisor is an extension of these efforts.

His philosophy about making a difference can be summed up by the words of Mahatma Gandhi: “We must be the change we wish to see.”
